Go-Go Gastro – My Soothing Smoothie for Viral Gastro

Did you know that rotavirus is the world’s number one cause of dehydrating gastroenteritis in children?

Almost every child in the world will be affected by the age of 5!

Rotavirus Infection: What Are the Signs?

When you notice the following in a child or adult, think Rotavirus:

  1. Fever
  2. Nausea and vomiting
  3. Watery diarrhoea
  4. Abdominal pain
  5. Runny nose
  6. Cough

What Should I Do?

When you notice the above symptoms, the primary goal is to prevent dehydration. Watery diarrhoea is a major concern here because this is how we lose so many fluids and electrolytes during infections.

We need to replace fluids and electrolytes with an oral rehydration solution.

The World Health Organisation has developed an optimal rehydration solution you can access from pharmacies that contain no artificial colours or flavours. Your other option is to make your own: dissolve 6 level teaspoons of sugar and ½ level teaspoon of salt into 1L water.

Use the Oral Rehydration Solution as the liquid for this smoothie.

Another main feature of this smoothie is Carob powder. Carob powder has been trialed and shown to induce a strong reduction of diarrhoea in the event of rotavirus in children. This is because of the high tannin content! Nutmeg has also been shown to act directly on rotavirus in the gut.

Green Bananas are an addition to this smoothie due to their resistant starch content (this is lost as they ripen and turn yellow). Resistant starch feeds our beneficial gut flora – feeding beneficial gut flora is crucial when we have Gastro!

Speaking of good gut flora, the use of ½ cup of Vaalia Yoghurt in this smoothie is a great way to get a dose of the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus LGG, a clinically trialed strain shown to be helpful during rotavirus infection!

Go-Go Gastro Smoothie


  • Heaped teaspoon Carob powder (about 5g)
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg (ground)
  • ½ green banana
  • ½ cup (~3 tablespoons) Vaalia yoghurt
  • ½ cup (125ml) Oral Rehydration Solution


  1. Add all of the above ingredients to a blender, with the powders put in last.
  2. Blend everything.
  3. Drink!

NOTE: Make and drink this smoothie twice a day for best results.
